The Guide Wanderings Short Fictions Illusions Book 1 eBook Kenneth G Bennett Reviews

I first read The Guide when it was as an advanced read on the author's website. I enjoyed the short story very much and I guessed who the guide was. But the more I have thought about it since reading it, I have more questions. Makes me wonder about the possibilities. I hope Mr. Bennett writes more for this story and one day makes it into a big novel because it is a strong idea. I look forward to more short stories in this series. (I counted only two uses of profanity in this story and had they not been used, this could easily had been a YA read, too, not just for adults.)
I received this story as a New Year's gift. I really enjoy the writing style of this author, and this short story was no different. But I need to emphasize that this is truly a short story. When my kindle indicated that I was at the 52% mark, I was shocked. It read almost like a prologue for a novel (*hint hint* Mr. Bennett-like a story about the life and adventures of Ryan). I did really like the direction the story took and, as always, Washington makes for great scenery.
Time heals many wounds, but it can’t mend all of them.

As much as I was intrigued by the beginning, the ending of this story is what really made me like it. I tried to slow down and savor the last few scenes because I was having such a good time following the Wagner family on their memorial hike, but the closer we came to the conclusion the stronger my curiosity grew about how it would all be tied up. It was a satisfying ending, although it also made me wish for a sequel! There is definitely room for one here if the author decides to write it.

There’s a twist in this tale that I figured out almost immediately. It was well done and fit into the plot nicely, but I would have preferred to have fewer clues about what was happening. This is the sort of thing that works best for me when I don’t know what’s going on until the last possible moment. One or two hints were all that was really needed.

With that being said, Mr. Bennett has a hypnotically smooth writing style that has captured my attention. I will be keeping an eye out for future books from him as I really enjoyed becoming immersed in this universe for the short time I was introduced to it. There’s definitely something to be said for science fiction that’s set in what appears to be a completely ordinary place and time.

I’d recommend The Guide to anyone who has ever let their imagination run wild while out on a hike.

Beautifully-written sci-fi short story with a gripping, totally unexpected ending. Love the Twilight Zone-like twist.
An admirable, fast-paced, complex story that's pregnant with hidden and suspenseful meanings.
Maybe it will be a good beginning of the book but as the short story it is nothing special.
I enjoyed this story as it is something that is totally different and creative. The story is an easy read, and it is hard to put down once you have started. Looking forward to the series!
